I bet it's safe to say as a parent when deciding on where you wanted to live schools were a big factor or if you are thinking of moving that is a deciding factor for your family. I think I told you how I've lived in our house for a long time, and while our neighborhood is great the public schools are not as nice. This is due to many factors.
Growing up here I went to Catholic grammar school and high school, and while part of me would like to send our kids there as well, I'm not sure if it is realistic for us with three kids. I was an only child, so while I'm sure it was hard there was only me to worry about. Now when I look at the price of grammar school, and let alone high school for three kids I think I might faint. Today it costs about $4,000 for grammar school and $10,000 for high school times that by three and add inflation every year and most or all of one of our salary will be paying for school alone forget about other costs. That's more then some colleges, which is just crazy to me.
That's why I was so excited to hear the public school by us that offers a Montessori program is no longer going to be a lottery system. They are turning the whole K-5 program into Montessori and offering it to anyone who lives in district, which is huge because now I know he can go to a great public school instead of there just being a slight chance. We still debate about what we should do when we really move, because the public high schools around here are not an option and Catholic school by then for three kids will probably be $40,000. I love our neighborhood and would like to raise our family here, it is just unfortunate due to schools we may not be able to. I hope in the future there will be a good public high school here, but I'm not sure that will really happen. Any other moms have this dilemma or decide to homeschool for similar reasons? All the things you never thought of before kids, it's crazy.

ReplyDeleteThis topic has been heavy on my mind recently as well. Our public schools are not terrible, but I know there are schools with better possibilities. I grew up in public school, though, and loved it so I worry if there's something there my kids would be missing out on. More and more I'm leaning towards the online K12 program. ReplyDeleteI was about to say, "You could always homeschool". The school system was definitely a deciding factor when we were looking for houses last time. Luckily, most of the suburbs where we are have pretty good ratings. But, it was definitely on my list of "things" that we HAD to have! Thanks for stopping by today.
