What's small to you?

I love discovering new blogs and usually end up staying up way too late reading them, since there are so many good ones out there. Last week I was looking at some blogs about how to make your space feel bigger and what to do with a small home so it doesn't feel so small. The blogger went on to say if she can host a large family party at her house then anyone can and also talked about how at times she felt embarrassed about her small home. I kept reading most of the tips she gave were decent, but not for us since most involved major construction.  Then at one point she mentioned the size of her home, 1800sq ft and I was in shock. Is it just me, but that does not constitute a small home.  I would say an average size home by us is 1400sq ft or so. Maybe it just depends on where you live, I'm not sure really but where we live 1800sq ft would be considered a good size, maybe even large.  I guess in the end I was just annoyed because I wasn't sure how she could have a whole blog about small living when her house was that size some people even made comments about that, so I know I'm not alone but I didn't want to leave anything negative, so at that point I just stopped reading it. Who knows, maybe where she is from that is small. When I talk about our house being small I feel it truly is at 968sq ft. I guess I was just wondering in other areas what is an average size home or what do you consider small?

  1. Our house (we rent) is tiny. Really tiny. So I get what your saying completely! I think people lose touch with what constitutes 'small' when they live in big houses.

  2. I think it really depends on where you live. I personally wouldn't consider 1800 small, but if you live in an area where you have room to spread out then I guess some people would! :) Thanks for stopping by Bee Friendly - now following you back! ;)

  3. Our apt is 940 sq ft and, though it is plenty of room for our family of 4, I am embarrassed to have get-togethers of large groups at our home because we just don't have room to put everyone. I can't help but think of all the different ways I could use 1800 sq ft of home!!!

  4. I'm not quite sure what the footage on our mobile home is but I'm certain it is much smaller than 1800 sq. foot! My parents are getting ready to build a new home that is only 1800 sq. foot & they think it's big LOL. I suppose maybe your right, it all depends on where you live.

  5. I too stay up late and read blogs. And I used to live in a 1300 sq foot home (includes garage) and had one gathering - EVER. I tried to make 27 people fit in my house and it was impossible. People were left standing and I was embarrassed that we had to climb over each other. But I live in a bigger house and it's expected that I host most parties now. I am a new follower. I would love it if you returned the favor.

  7. I am in the UK and have a medium sized house that is 1250sqft. We were in Florida on holiday in April and my hubby bought a magazine called 'Small Homes' to see if it had any good ideas for hidden storage etc and I think the smallest home featured was bigger than ours!! I frequently have gatherings of about 14 but have not braved bigger! We have bought a much bigger house and are moving next month but will end up living in 4 rooms until we have the time and money to do it all up!!

  8. That's about twice as big as my place! Now, I live in 2 bedroom apartment, which is completely different than a home, but still. I wouldn't call 1800sqft small.

  10. I live in a 954 sq ft, 2 bedroom apartment so 1800 sq ft home sounds pretty big to me!! I guess it depends on where you live and who you associate with... if most of her family/friends have 3000 sq ft homes or something I guess 1800 seems small to her. Who knows??

  11. 1800 isn't small.
The house we bought this year is 1600 including the finished room in the basement.
We have 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms.
I think I would be frustrated too doing all the reading then finding out their house wasn't small at all.

  12. We're currently living in 1100sq ft and it's by far the biggest thing we've ever lived in. It is a pretty tight space for parties, but the parties we do have are intimate and we're able to focus on the smaller number of people that are there. We compensate by having huge get togethers in summer when we can all be outside. What I love about the size of our house is that it's too small to spread out and forget anywhere else is there. It's keeps our family close and communicating.
